Today, March 5, 2025, the Parish of St. Stephen the Protomartyr in Ligao City, Albay, led by Rev. Fr. Paulo B. Barandon, observed Ash Wednesday, marking the commencement of the Lenten season—a period dedicated to fasting, prayer, and penance.
Ash Wednesday is a significant day in the liturgical calendar, symbolizing human mortality and the call to repentance. During the day’s services, ashes made from the previous year’s blessed palms were imposed on the foreheads of the faithful. As the ashes were applied, the words “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” or “Repent and believe in the Gospel” were spoken, emphasizing the themes of humility and conversion.
The parish scheduled multiple Masses to accommodate the congregation.
These services provided the community with opportunities to reflect on their spiritual journey and prepare for the 40-day period leading up to Easter. Under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Barandon, the parish emphasized the importance of the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The faithful were encouraged to engage in self-examination and renewal, aligning with the Church’s call to deepen one’s faith and commitment during this sacred time.
The observance of Ash Wednesday at St. Stephen the Protomartyr Parish set a contemplative tone for Lent, inviting parishioners to embark on a path of spiritual growth and transformation.
