Church Brief History

In 1606, Fray Luis de San Juan came to small settlement known as Cavasi, formerly a sitio of Polangui.  2 years later Cavasi was created as a parish with St. Stephen as the patron saint.  Fray Luis de San Juan was appointed the first pastor.  

In 1665 Cavasi was renamed  to Ligao annexed to Oas.  A year later Ligao declared its autonomy from Oas.  In 1702 Ligao became a municipality. 

In 1676, Fray Francisco Vicente attempted to build a church bricks and stone.  In 1760, construction of a much bigger church started. In 1812, the façade of the church was finished. In 1846, the roof made of tiles was finished.  In 1881, the main church was completed. And in 1882, the bell tower was completed. 

The years that followed up to the present had made major repairs and improvements to the church.
