JUST IN

In a significant event marking the Jubilee Year 2025, the faithful of the Filipino-Chinese Personal Parish Church and Diocesan Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus from Legazpi City embarked on a pilgrimage to the historic St. Stephen the Protomartyr Parish in Ligao City, Albay today, February 21, 2025. This visit underscores the unity and devotion of the Catholic community in the Diocese during this special year proclaimed by Pope Francis as the “Jubilee of Hope,” a period dedicated to grace, spiritual renewal, and celebration.

St. Stephen the Protomartyr Parish, established in the early 17th century, stands as a testament to enduring faith. Its origins trace back to August 24, 1608, when the first recorded baptism of native converts was conducted under the guidance of Fray Luis de San Juan. Over the centuries, the church has withstood various challenges, with its current structure completed in 1881 through the efforts of Fray Tomas Alpapara.

Designated as one of the pilgrim churches for the Jubilee Year 2025 by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, St. Stephen’s offers pilgrims the opportunity to receive plenary indulgences and partake in special liturgical events. The parish is easily accessible, located at San Esteban St., Guilid, Ligao City, and welcomes visitors during its office hours from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 11:30 am and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The pilgrimage from the Diocesan Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus, known for its vibrant community and devotion to its patron saint, exemplifies the spirit of the Jubilee. Such journeys foster spiritual growth, communal solidarity, and a renewed commitment to faith. As pilgrims traversed the path to Ligao City, they not only honored the historical significance of St. Stephen’s but also embraced the Jubilee’s call for hope and renewal. This event highlights the rich tapestry of faith and tradition in Albay, reflecting the enduring legacy of the Catholic Church. As the Jubilee Year continues, more such pilgrimages and spiritual activities are anticipated, strengthening the bonds of faith among communities. (Ana Liza L. Revidad)
